The purpose of the Mountain bike Instructors’ Award Scheme is to promote the safe enjoyment of all aspects of mountain biking in an off and on road environment.
The scheme provides training and assessment in the technical and group management skills required by those who wish to lead groups in a variety of off-road environments, in the United Kingdom, other than in winter conditions. The scheme also incorporates on road management training. It integrates training, experience and assessment in a variety of testing conditions in off-road country.
We have reached our GOAL
“ MIAS is the Premiere Mountain Bike Leadership Training Course”.
Scope of the scheme
The Mountain bike Instructors’ Award Scheme offers the opportunity to gain competence in leading cyclists in both on and off-road environments.
Completion of training course alone, without taking an assessment course, is not a qualification in itself, although it may be of considerable benefit to the trainee.
There are six different levels of training and instruction:
Level One – Basic Skills – allowing access into low-level terrain, with little potential hazards. i.e. country parks, canal towpaths, Bridleways and Cycle Paths in non-wilderness areas where help is almost immediately accessible.
Level Two – Intermediate Skills – allowing access into Wild Country, with the potential hazards that surround such terrain. Candidate must be in possession of a BELA Award, WGL or equivalent and Accredited APL. For low level rides on Bridleways below 600m in wilderness areas.
Level Three – Advanced Skills – allowing access into Mountainous Terrain and the potential hazards that surround such an environment. Must have ML Award, or WGL. This level covers areas as defined as mountainous by the MLTB, using such areas as well defined paths.
Level Four – Instructor – allowing access to input into courses and assess to that level.
Level Five – Instructor – allowing access to input at an advanced level into courses and assess for that level.
Level Six – Provider – allowing access to arrange and run courses and assessments.
